Although settlement began in 1828, the area was not classified as a village until the year of 1854. Few things have happened between those years, such as achieving its name. Four years after the European settlement, the region was named "Stratford" by Thomas Mercer Jones of the Canada Company. As well, the neighbourhood was the first to join the county of Perth in 1853. Stratford was originally known to be no more than a railway junction until it became a city in 1885 with 9,000 residents. It's first taste of historical events was in 1933 when a strike had started within the furniture workers. The Canadian army attempted to end the strike led by the Communist Workers' Unity League. This incident went down in history by ceasing military involvement in uprisings in Canada. Therefore, that was the final time the army could be called upon to stop rebellions.
